What is Access Control and IP Video?

Access Control

Access control is a system which enables an authority to control access to areas and resources in a given physical facility or computer-based information system. An access control system, within the field of physical security, is generally seen as the second layer in the security of a physical structure.

The justification for electronic key management is often based on the idea that security directors and managers, as well as facility professionals, want to control and manage the entry and use of rooms and assets within a facility, or institution. Today's modern access control systems rely to a large extent upon access card (mag stripes, proximity cards, smart cards, etc.) but they often do not cover a certain number of assets, doors, and rooms, which are still accessed by traditional keys. These tradition mechanical keys must be controlled and managed in order to assure a safe and secure system.

Sometimes access control companies will provide an alternative to the standard "arm every door with card readers" approach by suggesting that the client use a single key management system to protect a large number of seldom used doors, as a value added alternative.

IP Video

Professional video over IP systems use some existing standard video codec to reduce the program material to a bitstream (e.g., an MPEG transport stream), and then to use an Internet Protocol (IP) network to carry that bitstream encapsulated in a stream of IP packets. This is typically accomplished using some variant of the RTP protocol.

IP Network Video Security is a booming market that offers products allowing you to monitor your home or business from anywhere in the world.

An IP Camera is a stand-alone device which allows you to view live, full motion video from anywhere in the world. IP Cameras can be used for surveillance of both homes and businesses. With the ability to record live video to a remote location, IP Cameras allow you to make sure your recorded video is safe by storing it at a location that only you can access.

Take a look at this white paper on video integration using the NiagaraAX Framework that you can benefit from when implementing IP Video.
